Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition Program

The Outstanding Rural Scholar Recognition Program (ORSRP) is a wonderful opportunity for you to finance your education before you go to school. If you know that you want to return home to practice medicine or work in an allied health position after you finish your degree, your community can sponsor your education and the State Office of Rural Health (SORH) will match half the costs.

This is also a great program for allied health professionals working in rural areas who wish to return to school to pursue a more advanced degree. For instance, if you are a nurse wishing to pursue your Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant certification, your rural employer can agree to sponsor you for ORSRP and SORH will match your employer's investment for the cost of your degree. All you have to do in return is return to your rural employer following your certification and remain there for the same number of years as you were supported while obtaining your creditials, and the loan is 100% forgiven.

Rural Communities Health Care Investment Program

The Rural Communities Health Care Investment Program (RCHIP) is designed to attract and retain healthcare professionals in rural communities by providing incentives such as stipends or loan repayment assistance to non-physician healthcare professionals who agree to practice in rural medically underserved areas. The funds for RCHIP are made available from the state Tobacco settlement.

LOAN REPAYMENT FROM OTHER SOURCES

National Health Service Corps

National Health Service Corps is a loan repayment program for primary care clinicians working in underserved areas. To find out if you qualify for the National Health Service Corps Program, contact the Texas Primary Care Office at 512-458-7518.

National Public Service Loan Forgiveness

Student loan balances can be forgiven after 120 consecutive on-time payments if you have been working in public service for that period (10 years). Public service is defined as working for a nonprofit 501c3 organization or for a public entity (i.e. local, state or federal government service). If you are working in the medical field and your employer does not fit one of the two above categories, you may apply for eligibility to this program on a case-by-case basis.
