Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller Statement Regarding Trump Lifting Steel and Aluminum Tariffs on Canada and Mexico (5/17/2019)

“I would like to congratulate President Trump and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on the deal they announced today to lift Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Mexico and Canada. These tariffs were a major obstacle to finalizing President Trump’s United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) and the long overdue refit of NAFTA.”

“With the lifting of these tariffs, the door to Congressional approval of the USMCA is now open, and all Congressional Democrats have to do is walk through. Our country needs this new trade agreement, and the reasons Democrats give for stalling are disappearing. Congress must approve the USMCA, overhaul NAFTA, and begin a new era of fair trade with Canada and Mexico.”

“While this agreement is about steel and aluminum, the ones who will benefit are our farmers. This agreement is good news for American ag producers who have been subject to retaliatory tariffs from Canada and Mexico. I fully expect those tariffs to now be lifted. When the American farmer benefits, America benefits.”
